“Greg Cagle and Rick Nash lead the charge…This is a solid session with meaningful lyrics and music that sticks to your ribs…This team based in Charlotte, NC is worth listening to.” – D. Oscar Groomes – O’s Place Jazz - review of Soul Complete

Charlotte, NC -May 12, 2010 – Hot off the heels of their debut album Soul Complete, North Carolina-based songwriting duo Cagle & Nash are back from the studio with their sophomore release – Loungevity. From the moment you pick up the disc and see the album art adorned with pics of sunglasses and cocktail bars, it’s clear that Greg Cagle (lead vox, guitar) and Rick Nash (horns) have taken the lounge aesthetic to heart for this album. And the pair don’t disappoint, with 11 smooth and soulful new tracks spanning a range of cocktail-friendly genres.

The overall vibe of Loungevity fits in the jet-set philosophy of the classic Space Age Pop and Lounge acts from the ‘50s and ‘60s. There are the lush horn and string arrangements, topped with Cagle’s smooth baritone and accented by tight female background vocals. But Cagle & Nash also add a bit of funk and bite to the mix, drawing influences from late ‘70s acts like STEELY DAN and CHICAGO.

Loungevity begins with the upbeat and radio-friendly “Straight to L.A.,” a perfect track to start any day. “Black Tie Affair” tells tales of the good life, spent behind the bar with a cocktail in one hand and a stack of money in the other. “If Only” and “Mmm Paradise” draw influences from the smooth bossa-nova vibe, while “A Little Bit of Attention” is a full-on funk jam. All-around, Cagle & Nash tackle each genre with masterful execution, both in terms of songwriting and arrangement. The playing is top-notch and the record exudes a certain class and sophistication.

The duo of Rick Nash and Greg Cagle first got their start back in the ‘60s, playing in bands near their hometown in North Carolina, most notably in the band Sugarcreek. Fast forward to the ‘80s and the duo reunited to begin composing and recording songs. Rick and Greg worked together on and off until 2008, when they officially united to form the duo Cagle & Nash. In 2009 they released their debut album Soul Complete, which was received well by both radio and press. O’s Place Jazz Newsletter even named the record one of the Best Albums of 2009. Now, with the release of Loungevity the duo are back on the scene and ready keep making music.

###

Please check out Cagle and Nash’s sophomore release Loungevity for a full dose of smooth music and laid-back vibes. If you have any questions, comments or would like to set up an interview don’t hesitate to contact Rob Phillips at Powderfinger Promotions. You can learn more about Cagle & Nash and see their latest show dates on their website at http://cagleandnash.com.

“Loungevity” is songwriting/producing duo Cagle & Nash’s second release in less than a year following hot on the heels of their first project “Soul Complete.” Well, unless you count their holiday single release “Celebrate the Holidays.”

The title “Loungevity”is a play on the word longevity that only serves to indicate the mood and tone of these 11 songs. Each of them is uniquely crafted. The lack of an overall theme is intentional. The strategy is to deliver some of the duo’s best arrangement and production yet. Songs from this CD like “If Only,” “I Don’t Mind,” and “Big Ol Empty Room” are destined to receive airplay across at least three genres (smooth Jazz, Soul/R&B, and Pop). The A cappella song “You Remind Me” is a cross between McFerrin and Take 6 with a nice poignant lyric and all vocals supplied by Greg Cagle. Very hip! Very cool! The lead-off track “Straight to LA” delivers plenty of punch and puts the “it’s a brand new day” attitude in your mind. Refreshing! “The Grass was Always Greener” is another up-tempo tune with a full horn section kicking butt and some great solos by Jon Thornton on trumpet, Tim Gordon on alto sax, and none other than French jazz guitarist Daniel Domenge.

This project consists of an all-star line-up of David Rhyne, David Floyd of Floyd’s Produce, Kenneth Leonard Jr. (of Anthony Hamilton band), Jon Thornton, Tim Gordon, and a host of others accompanying Greg Cagle and Rick Nash. Exquisite touches of Robyn Springer and others provide background vocals. Arrangements are Cagle, Nash, and Bobby Aycock. Both Cagle & Nash share production. All compositions are co-penned by Cagle and Nash.

“Loungevity” is songwriting producing duo Cagle & Nash’s second release in less than a year following hot on the heels of their first joint project “Soul Complete”. Well that is unless you count their holiday single release “Celebrate the Holidays”

The title Loungevity” is a play on the word Longevity that only serves to indicate the mood and tone of these 11 songs. Each of them is crafted uniquely, the lack of a theme is intentional, the intent more to deliver some of the duo’s best arrangement and production yet. Songs from this CD like “If Only”, “I Don’t Mind” and “Big Ol’ Empty Room” are destined to receive airplay across at least three genres (smooth Jazz, Soul/R&B and Pop). The a cappella song “You Remind Me” (except for piano) is a cross between McFerrin and Take 6 with a nice poignant lyric and all vocals supplied by Greg Cagle. Very hip! Very cool! The leadoff track “Straight to LA” delivers plenty of punch and puts the “it’s a brand new day” attitude in your mind. Refreshing! “The Grass was Always Greener” is another up-tempo tune with a full horn section kicking butt and some great solos by Jon Thornton on trumpet, Tim Gordon on alto sax and the none other than French jazz guitarist Daniel Domenge.

This project consists of an all-star line-up of David Rhyne, David Floyd of Floyd’s Produce, Kenneth Leonard Jr (of Anthony Hamilton band) Jon Thornton and Tim Gordon and a host of others accompanying Greg Cagle and Rick Nash. Little exquisite touches of Robyn Springer and host of others on background vocals. Arrangements are Cagle, Nash and Bobby Aycock and both Cagle & Nash share Production. All compositions are co-penned by Cagle and Nash.

Greg Cagle and Rick Nash grew up in small town Concord (NC) back when it was hip to listen to cats like James Brown, Sam & Dave, Otis Redding, Wilson Picket, the Four Tops, and The Temptations. Cagle & Nash crossed paths for the first time at the young ages of 15 and16 respectively. Back then they called them “basement” bands—Doug & The Soul Review, The Tamrons and a host of others. Then there were the “working” bands like Sugarcreek where both Greg and Rick played on more than one occasion. Cagle continued to build his catalog of original material and honed his composing and arranging skills. Meanwhile Nash went on to study studio recording and production under none other than Mark Williams (engineer on projects of R.E.M., Don Dixon, and James Brown fame).

Fast forward to late December when they began work on their critically acclaimed CD project entitled “Soul Complete” which was 11 sons that were each singles in their own right with R&B genre chart action in Cashbox Magazine and Smooth Jazz chart action on smoothjazz.com’s Indie Charts. That release was immediately followed by a Christmas season release “Celebrate the Holidays”

This newest release “Loungevity” is being targeted to those same markets as “Soul Complete” was and is taking the song arrangement and production up a new level for Cagle & Nash. Expect more good things with two additional releases in the works

It’s summer. The summer in mill cities such as Rock Hill even if the mills are dead, the legacy remains means “the beach.” The mills would close for a week and the working world would load up and go to the beach. Myrtle Beach, specifically, North Myrtle Beach and Ocean Drive, for those who loved then, and love still, beach music. That means music you can shag to.

The shag is South Carolina’s state dance. It is not just a dance, it is religion to many. Rock Hill’s shag club is legendary. Beach music might be this area’s theme song of generations.

All that adds up to a 58-year-old guy from Rock Hill, a trumpet player in bands since he was 15 years old, having the top beach music song of them all on the Cashbox list for the past three weeks.

“Pick Up the Phone,” by Cagle & Nash. The Nash is Rock Hill’s Rick Nash, a mill guy in his bones from growing up in Concord, N.C., where Cannon Mills was king.

“My parents both worked in the mill,” Nash said. “We’d go to the beach, and I would peak through the boards of the fence at ‘The Pad’ and watch people shag and drink beer.”

Nash played in soul bands in those teenage days — the bands including Anthony Maner and the Aqualads Review fronted by the legendary Little Earl Dawkins — that played the music of the shag that the Carolinas mill workers danced to at the beach. He went on with his life, the Navy, working for a design company, but the music remained. It remained when he went to work at Fort Mill’s Muzak Co., after he moved to Rock Hill a dozen years ago.

“But I never could shag because I was up on stage playing, not dancing with the audience,” he said.

Something pulled Nash back to beach music even though he didn’t even look for it. He and a buddy from those Concord music days, Charlotte banking executive Greg Cagle, started writing songs and compiling a CD. It took almost a year. A lady at Muzak remarked: “You could dance the shag to that.”

So Nash took the CD, with “Pick Up the Phone” on it, to radio stations hoping for airplay.

‘It’s more smooth jazz’

The musicians didn’t then, and don’t now, consider it beach music.

“It’s more smooth jazz, I would say,” Nash said.

“Soul, and jazz,” Cagle said.

But the deejays in the beach music universe started playing it. A lot. So much so that what started out as a jazz song with some soul thrown in has turned into this beach music hit.

Sure, these guys played at the beach for so long four decades ago. They know and love the music that is part of their heritage. But still, this song “wasn’t written for the beach market,” Nash said.

“I’m not even sure I understand how it got so popular,” Cagle said.

And the topper might be that Nash has been married for 28 years to a lady named Mary Charles Nash. She’s from Tennessee. Although the couple took some shag lessons one time, in all these years she has never been to Myrtle Beach, the home of beach music and the shag.

“Not even once,” Mary Charles Nash admitted.

But if the music takes off more, Mary Charles Nash said she might just take that trip and shag to her own husband’s music. Along the beach where the dreams started all those years ago, and dreams of music success still are alive.

February 1, 2009

We Just uploaded to the MySpace page, the final mixes to six tracks from the “Soul Complete” CD which has a scheduled release date of Mid-February. Please give them a listen – we would love to have your feedback. You can check out samples of all 12 tracks on our website: http://www.cagleandnash.com

These 12 tracks have been compared lots of different artists but we like to think it was all those influences throughout our musical lives have been a huge part of where our own unique sound comes from.

Some really good friends of ours have lent a tremendous amount of talent to the Soul Complete project. We had our friend Kenneth Leonard Jr. (of Anthony Hamilton’s touring band) lend some awesome piano and organ chops to the project. Bill Baucom, Larry Farber and Bobby Aycock played some excellent keyboard stuff on the project as well. Sax players? Of Course! Greg played a big majority of the sax tracks but we had some really fills by Larry Gianneschi and awesome Alto sax work on solos and parts from Zach Wheeler of The Entertainers and Chris Mitchell (incredible sax talent who is still a high school student). Some really funky and tight drumming on the project from Tovaris Matthews, Steve McGuirt and Dave Rhyne (who also engineered the whole project). Joe Mier played some tight funky bass on a big majority of these tracks. If you haven’t heard of these cats, trust me you will.

Stay tuned, as we get closer to our anticipated late February CD Release. You will be able to purchase from CD Baby, iTunes, Rhapsody, Amazon MP3, and a host of others.

Meanwhile you can catch the Greg Cagle Acoustic Sets regularly at Dolcetto Wine Room in Charlotte on every Friday & Saturday night.

When it comes to the masters of strings arrangements , David Floyd is one of those folks in the “A” List that immediately comes to mind. He has quite a strong reputation in the Charlotte area for more than 35 years and has built up a large clientele in Nashville as well in the past 10 years.

David and I played in a band together back in the “%&*ties” where he showed his R&B chops on such funky keyboard stuff diverse ad Herbie and Horace to Stevie as well.

When we started contemplating how best to sweeten these tracks of ours for this “Soul Complete” project, the first name out of my mouth was David Floyd of Floyd’s Produce. We’ve given him three of the tracks thus far and got back an incredible score already on “Any Where You Wanna Go” (I’ll try to get a rough mix up in the next few days).

The transparency and the tastefulness he captured with a sixties string sound is beyond compare. We are very excited to have him working on this project with us and cannot wait to share his gift when Cagle & Nash’s “Soul Complete” drops in a few short weeks.

Be sure to check out his MySpace Page and leave a comment and check out some of his fine strings samples on his Nashville Music Pros profile page.

10.20.08

Production is winding down on eleven soulful songs about love and the loss thereof. Some really funky stuff being put together with some excellent backing vocal work by the in-demand background vocalist Robyn Springer. Steve McGuirt and Tovaris Matthews traded drumming duties on the tracks and they are sounding very very much in the pocket on all fronts.

We recently were gifted with the soulful jazzy experese of Mr. Ken Leonard Jr. of Uncommon Ground and Anthony Hamilton fame and some more skillful pads by Bill Baucom of Chapel Hill and Joe Meir on bas has been replacing with some solid bottom.

Still to-do are some overdubs, some expert string aarangements by Floyd’s Produce’s on David Floyd, and horns and sweetening etc. but the sound is shaping very nicely and the concept seems to be miraculously making sense. There are at least five or six tracks that have singles potential
